Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The 39th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is being held on September 10–28 in Geneva, Switzerland. Some delegates from Mongolia, headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to Swiss Confederation L.Purevsuren, are participating in the session.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet delivered the keynote remarks. She expressed willingness to put her utmost effort in protecting and promoting human rights, and respecting equality of all while emphasizing former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein’s contribution to the protection of human rights by representing those whose rights have been violated. Prior, former President of Chile, Ms. Michelle Bachelet was the Executive Director of UN Women.

UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation Léo Heller, in his speech during the first meeting of the session, gave information about his visit to Mongolia in April, 2018. He noted, as the availability of drinking water and sanitation facilities in Mongolia differs in urban-rural and apartment-ger areas, the government shall provide subsidies for increasing the number of wells, expanding water network to the ger areas, and improving water access of vulnerable people.

The Mongolian delegation is planning to organize an event themed ‘Local solutions for addressing pressing global issues: Citizens’ contribution and role in the advancement of human rights and development’ in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and to promote a project being implemented in Mongolia within framework of the 39th session.

The session will take place until September 28.
